Workshops on the traditional style of playing the Jalisco harp taught by Jalisco virtuoso, William Faulkner, both
in a mariachi and as a soloist in the style of southern Jalisco. Instruction with be given in both left and right hand
techniques, and various pieces will be taught to illustrate the techniques. Solos, duos, and even a 4-harp
arrangement will be taught. All harps and harpists welcome! Non-harpists/ auditors also welcome.
William Faulkner has been playing mariachi for 39 years, and Jalisco harp for 34. William’s love affair with the
harp began in 1977, shortly before graduating from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in music. In 1981 he began
studying harp with Arturo Mendoza (harpist with Mariachi Vargas from 1945-1995) and in 1982 He traveled to
Zapotiltic, Jalisco to meet Arturo’s father, José Mendoza who was a noted harp soloist in the tradition of
southern Jalisco. Inspired by José Mendoza, William began playing solo harp as well as continuing to play harp
with Mariachi Mixtlán, which he directed from 1980 to 1998.
In the ensuing years William has played with various other mariachis, notably Mariachi International America
and Mariachi Cobre, and has accompanied such artists as Cuco Sanchez, Federico Villa, Juan Valentín, Vikki
Carr, Linda Ronstadt and others.As a soloist, William has performed throughout Jalisco, including Guadalajara,
Ajijic, Atequiza, Autlán, Chapala, Ciudad Guzmán, Cocula, El Grullo, Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos, Lagos de
Moreno, Mezquitic, Ocotlán, Sayula, Tequila, Tlajomulco de Zuñiga, Tlaquepaque, Tonalá, Tototlán, Zapotiltic,
Zapotlanejo and others. He is currently the “Arpista Municipal” of Tequila, Jalisco. In 2014 Zapotiltic, Jalisco
made him an adopted son.
The Multi-Cultural Music Fellowship (MCMF) is a 501 c 3 non-profit. Founded in 1989 to promote the 1st Festival
of Harps concert series and educational outreach programs, it has expanded its work to include the Bay Area
Youth Harp Ensemble and the Mission Harp Ensemble and a wide variety of musical programs. Our mission is
to introduce people to the many different styles of world music, and to the possibilities of integration and
expansion of these styles.
